Taipans Off-Season Report - May

As the off-season continues, check in with how the Kenfrost Homes Cairns Taipans are going across the world.

Bouncing back from two losses to end April, Jack McVeigh and his Capitanes de Arecibo have gone undefeated over May with two games remaining, and have recorded three wins against Mayaguez’s trio of Sam Waardenburg, Nathan Sobey and Tyrell Harrison.

Averaging 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists over the month, the forward earned a spot in the BSN All-Star game, where he put up 12 points, five assists and three rebounds alongside Sobey and Montrezl Harrell.

McVeigh will face the Indios de Mayaguez again as part of his last six games in Puerto Rico, with his final game confirmed for June 8.

Facing Alex Higgins-Titsha, Jason Cadee and Jesse Edwards to begin the month, Reyne Smith caught fire early to score 37 points with six boards as his Mustang’s took down the Bankstown Bruins by 26 points.

Hitting six triples on the night, the guard doubled his perimeter scoring the following weekend to set a new NBL1 record of 12 three pointers the following weekend at 63%, while setting a new career high of 43 points in their 24-point win over Albury.

Jumping up to 8th place in the NBL1 East, Smith has also risen to third in the conference’s top scorers with his 23.3 points per game, and will face Fabijan Krslovic, Wani Swaka Lo Buluk and Hunter Goodrick to close out May.

After a two-point loss against Auckland, Will Lopez and his Hawke’s Bay Hawks have logged back-to-back to wins in New Zealand.

With a host of NBL talent in his roster, Lopez and the Hawks currently sit with a 2-5 record however have maintained a positive points differential after a number of close losses.

With momentum building, Hawke’s Bay’s schedule sees them on the road for the rest of May to end the first half of the season, before returning home as they enter June.
