In 2024, the Cairns Taipans, alongside the Queensland Government and NBL Assists launched the Cairns Taipans Academy – Girls, an initiative to promote girls’ involvement in sport across Cairns and seek to find the next generation of WNBL, WNBA and Opals stars. 

With the pilot commencing in October, the Taipans Academy – Girls (“TAG”) further strengthened the skyrocketing participation in basketball, delivering free sessions that included individual physical skills, team-based strategy sessions and goal setting. 

Six high schools throughout the region were engaged, while a special ‘TAG Open Day’ was available to any girls in Cairns aged 14-16 years old. 

Delivered by Taipans players and coaches, but also supported by female athletes, CQUniversity High Performance staff and NBL Assists, the pilot achieved great outcomes for the participants and built a strong program model for the future.
