Waardenburg’s Return Edges Closer as Taipans Regroup

The Kenfrost Homes Cairns Taipans have been eagerly awaiting the return of dynamic big man and last year’s club MVP Sam Waardenburg, who remains sidelined with an ankle injury suffered during the pre-season.

The 208cm (6ft 10in) versatile forward was set to lead Cairns’ frontcourt after career-best NBL25 campaign and a standout off-season stint in Puerto Rico — where he averaged 17.2 points and 7.3 rebounds while guiding Mayaguez to the BSN Conference Finals.

Waardenburg’s absence has been a major blow for the side looking to find rhythm after Sunday’s 35-point loss to Melbourne United, but the club remains confident its captain will be back on court by December.

“When we talk about leadership and scoring, Waardenburg is a massive piece in this,” Taipans Head Coach Adam Forde said.

“Now, we want to be careful that we don’t sit here and say that he’s the holy grail answer. We want to make sure we’re still stacking days and when Waardenburg comes back in, the burden of scoring isn’t solely on him.

“Sam’s our captain and him being out is a massive loss and we’re still finding our way with a new starting five. Is it taking longer than other teams, 100 per cent. (The injury) impacts that, but again, you stack days, you move on, we train and we prepare for the next one.”

Forde said while the New Zealander is still a few weeks away from returning to training, his presence around the group has been invaluable as the Taipans navigate the early rounds of NBL26.

“I’m sure he got some cabin fever within a couple of weeks in a hard cast, not able to go anywhere,” Forde said.

“Just for him to get out and be among the group and get involved is really important. The last thing you want for injured players is to feel isolated from the group. Sam is such a big piece of who we are, and he’s been with me for three years now.

“So even though he’s injured I still want him to be part of this journey, and his contribution is still important.”

With his shooting range, playmaking, size and leadership, Waardenburg’s return is expected to provide a significant boost as the Taipans aim to climb back into contention.
