Snakes re-sign Bruce for 2014/15

Guard Shaun Bruce will return to the Skytrans Cairns Taipans for his second professional season after today signing a one-year deal.

Bruce played 21 games in his rookie campaign, making the most of limited court time behind Cameron Gliddon and import guards Demetri McCamey and Jamar Wilson.

Taipans head coach Aaron Fearne said it was Bruce’s professionalism in his rookie season that had earned him another contract with the Taipans.

“Shaun’s number-one strength is his professionalism. He knows our scouting reports inside out, and spends a lot of time understanding and putting them into action on the training court,” Fearne said.

“He plays with toughness and physicality, he competes on every play and really trained well for us every week,” he said.

The 192-centimetre Horsham, Victoria native spent last off-season captaining the Ballarat Miners in the SEABL, but will stay in Cairns this year to play QBL for the Bartercard Cairns Marlins.

Fearne said this would be an opportunity for Bruce to build on his game ahead of his second professional season.

“He’s obviously going to have a significant role there, which he is certainly capable of having captained Ballarat last season,” Fearne said.

“Bruce arrived in Cairns in 2012 as a development player and member of the CQUniversity Taipans Academy, where he won the inaugural Aron Baynes Award for Most Outstanding Athlete in 2013.

2014/15 Taipans roster to-date:

  • #3 Cameron Gliddon
  • #7 Shaun Bruce
  • #9 Mitchell Young
  • #11 Cameron Tragardh
  • #13 Stephen Weigh
