The CQUniversity Cairns Taipans have completed the local contingent of their 2023-24 NBL line-up with Marlins standout Lachlan Anderson. The 6’9” Australian forward was offered his first NBL contract after just eight appearances with the Marlins, signing a two-year deal.
Anderson has previously played in Lithuania, but most recently suited up for his second stint with TFT Skopje in Macedonia’s ABA Liga, averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds.
Taipans Head Coach Adam Forde said that he noticed the Sydneysider while he was watching tape on the latest Taipans import, Patrick Miller.
“Lachlan really sparked my interest when we were studying film on Pat. They played against each other while in Lithuania. I recall one game where Lachlan had 11 points with a few blocks and steals in a win for his team. From there, our assistant Will Lopez started to deep dive on him for me,” explained Forde.
“I knew of Lachlan as the basketball player, mainly from my depth chart from his time in college but I didn’t know him as the person.
“Will was instrumental in changing that by getting him up to Cairns. From there I was able to run some work group workouts and liked what he could bring to our team, both on and off the court."
Anderson has made an immediate impact in the NBL1 North, averaging 19.8 points (47.9% FG) 4.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals across nine games.
“This trend continues the rich connection between the Marlins and Taipans - a pathway that was established long before I arrived. Like we have done previously with Lat Mayen, Ben Ayre and a number of players before them,” said Forde.
“The Marlins set-up here is such a valuable tool to engage players who are just on the fringe of making the NBL. We can workshop with them and see if they’re capable of making the transition from NBL1.”
Anderson said that he was thrilled to sign his first professional contract in Australia, his goal since graduating from Eastern Kentucky University in 2020.
“I’ve been trying to make the NBL since I left college, and coming to Cairns has been the best move. I know they took a risk on me when they recruited me to the Marlins, and Kerry got me in front of Fordey,” said Anderson.
“You hear about how Fordey is a player’s coach, but you don’t realise to just what extent until you get here. He’s a great guy and he really pushes his players.
“Seeing Lat and Ben take it to the next level with the Taipans, after playing Marlins, gives me confidence what can be done. If you work hard here, you’ll get your shot.”
