CQUniversity Cairns Taipans Indigenous Programs (TIP) Manager and NBL1 Head Coach Kerry Williams has been selected to the Australian Boomers coaching staff for the 2021 FIBA Qualifier game, to be held in Cairns next Saturday 20 February at the Pop-up Arena.
The former Taipans player was a successful product of Cairns Basketball, winning a state championship with the Marlins and playing 105 NBL games for the Taipans.
While running TIP, Williams concurrently works with Basketball Queensland as the Women’s U20’s Head Coach and serves as the State Performance Officer for Cairns.
He has been at the helm of the Cairns Dolphins in the NBL1 since 2018 and continues to mentor many young basketball players in the region.
His selection to the Boomers squad is the first time the Cairns-local will get to dress in the green and gold, and an outstanding opportunity in his promising coaching career.
Williams joins Adam Caporn as Head Coach (CoE Men’s Head Coach/Tokyo 2020 Men’s Olympic Team Assistant Coach) with additional support and mentorship of Gordie McLeod, who brings Olympic expertise having been an assistant coach for the Australian men’s team at Beijing.
Basketball Australia today announced the squad, with some of the country’s most exciting young talent.
Four members of the roster have recently been playing in the NBA G League or College basketball (USA); Taran Armstrong (California Baptist University), Hunter Clarke (University of Montana), Hunter Goodrick (University of South Dakota) and Matt Kenyon (South Bay Lakers, NBA G League).
Representatives of the world-leading NBA Global Academy who have been selected are Tyrese Proctor and Alex Toohey, with Dyson Daniels, Jack McWilliams, Patrick Ryan, David Okwera, Reyne Smith and Harry Wessels all current CoE scholarship holders.
