The CQUniversity Cairns Taipans will hold the opening game of the 2021 Indigenous Round, hosting the Brisbane Bullets on Wednesday 26 May in what will be the team’s last home game of the season and the last game at the Cairns Pop-up Arena.
The team will be wearing Indigenous design by Rhianne Williams, a local Cairns artist that is currently based in Brisbane, called ngankirri (one mob) and recognises four Indigenous players that have played for the Taipans - Tim Duggan, Deba George, Kerry Williams and Nathan Jawai, while also reflecting all Indigenous players across North Queensland and their cultural heritage.
The tracks leading out from the centre of the jersey is a representation of the players and their connection with their respective communities outside of Cairns.
The circle symbolises a meeting place where the players come and go to share their talents and love for the sport.
The turtles are a representation of their families, their supporters and the symbolic meaning of longevity in many cultures.
The blue hues showcase the Great Barrier Reef, as one of the seven natural wonders in the world and located in Cairns’ backyard.
The reef is not only recognised worldwide but throughout all Indigenous cultures. Williams chose to feature this to “highlight the importance of the taking care of our country, our land, our water and our cultural heritage.”
The #OrangeArmy will be able to purchase both the jerseys and the shorts at the game next week – purchase tickets here now!
