The Kenfrost Homes Cairns Taipans return to Cairns Convention Centre on Thursday night determined to bounce back in front of their home fans when they host an Illawarra Hawks side full of confidence after a stunning road win in Perth.
While the Hawks sit near the bottom of the NBL ladder, the Taipans know better than to focus on standings in one of the competition's most unpredictable seasons. Illawarra proved just how dangerous they can be by knocking off the Wildcats at RAC Arena last weekend, a result that has only reinforced the message coming out of Cairns' camp.
Taipans lead assistant coach Will Lopez said every game in NBL27 presents a new challenge.
“It’s so close between first and last. If you look at someone’s ladder position, you’re going to be in a bit of trouble,” Lopez said.
“They’re a talented team and only two years removed from winning a championship. In this league, anybody can beat anybody on any night.”
The Taipans will again be without Jaylin Galloway, who is expected to miss up to eight weeks after suffering a low-grade spinal compression fracture.
While Galloway’s absence leaves a significant hole in the lineup, it also creates an opportunity for others to step up and make their mark.
Lopez believes the answer lies within the group.
“Everybody has got to step up,” he said.
“We’ve got 12 players and three development players. It’s about opportunity and being ready when your number is called.”
One player who could benefit most is NBL Next Star Luke Paul, with the talented young guard set for increased responsibility during Galloway’s stint on the sidelines.
After reviewing last week's loss to Melbourne United, the Taipans have identified several areas they need to improve heading into Thursday night.
Turnovers were a key issue, with Cairns committing a season-high 18 against United. In a competition where every possession matters, ball security will be critical against a Hawks team that thrives in transition.
Lopez believes the Taipans hurt themselves at important moments and missed opportunities to seize control of the contest.
“We probably hurt ourselves and took our chances away to push the lead out or capitalise on our opportunities,” he said.
Improved rebounding and execution on both ends of the floor will also be key as the Taipans look to return to the winner's circle.
Import guard Jaylon Brown continues to embrace life in Far North Queensland and is eager to reward the Cairns faithful with another strong performance at home.
“I love the crowd, I love the fans,” Brown said.
“I look forward to continuing to play in front of the home crowd and getting more wins here.”
Brown was influential in the Taipans' victory over Illawarra in Wollongong earlier this season, dishing out a season-high nine assists as Cairns controlled the contest.
The import guard remains focused on growth and believes the team's best basketball is still ahead.
“There is always room for improvement,” Brown said.
“We’ve got to focus on the next game and be ready to go.”
Cairns remains undefeated this season and is 5-0 when Brown knocks down two or more three-pointers.
Illawarra will enter Thursday night's clash with renewed belief after their impressive win over Perth.
After enduring a slow start to the season, Illawarra delivered one of its most complete performances of the campaign to defeat the Wildcats on the road and will be eager to build on that momentum.
That makes the challenge even greater for the Taipans, who know there are no easy wins in the NBL.
“The form guide doesn’t really matter the way the league is right now,” Lopez said.
“If you take anybody lightly, you’re going to get burnt.”
