The Kenfrost Homes Cairns Taipans are proud to announce the return of Adam Forde as Head Coach, bringing the respected mentor back on a new two-year contract. He first joined the Club in 2021 and this new deal will extend his time in Far North Queensland to seven straight seasons.
Re-signing for a fourth time, Forde said returning was not a decision taken lightly but a range of factors were considered, including the Club’s imminent evolution.
"I'm genuinely excited to return to the Taipans and continue on what we've been building, especially when we’ve put in so much work already. There have obviously been some waves to ride but it goes without saying that we want more success for ourselves and for Cairns,” said Coach Forde.
“It might be difficult to see from the outside looking in, but the vision for the franchise is crystal clear now. I’m grateful that I get to be part of writing the next chapter as this Club and this community are extremely important to me. I’m looking forward to the future – I’m all in.”
During his initial four-year tenure (2021-2025) Forde led the Taipans to their most recent playoff appearance in 2022-23, earning the NBL Coach of the Year honours as well as guiding numerous players to league awards.
Under his leadership, the Taipans have established Cairns as the number one destination for player development, with “Fordey’s Factory” becoming synonymous with the Club’s recruitment identity and ability to attract emerging and undiscovered talent.
After signing and extending his original contract, Forde stepped away from the Club in early 2025 to explore international opportunities, joining the 3x3 Australian Gangurrus during the off-season. As the Head Coach of the men’s side, he won Gold at the 3x3 Asia Cup and Bronze at the inaugural Red Bull Champions Cup.
During that off-season, productive discussions with the Taipans’ Executive Board and the Club’s private ownership planning led to the 44-year-old signing a new contract and committing to the franchise moving forward.
Taipans President Troy Stone praised the ongoing partnership and collaboration between the Board, front office and Forde throughout a number of behind-the-scenes transitions.
"Adam has been instrumental in changing the culture of this Club and we couldn’t be happier to bring him back. His personal ethos aligns perfectly with where we want to take this franchise,” he said.
“The dialogue has been open and honest, as always, and this new contract reflects the strong relationship we've maintained over the years and the faith we have in his mentorship and experience.
"His ability to develop players, get the best from our athletes and build genuine connections throughout the community has set a foundation we're still building on today.”
Forde's appointment comes as the Club secures key pieces for the upcoming campaign, with marquee player Jack McVeigh and emerging sharpshooter Reyne Smith both returning for a second season.
Forde will lead Australia at the 3x3 World Cup and the Commonwealth Games in July, before stepping away from the Gangurrus to focus on the Taipans full-time.
