Dolphins lure Amy Lewis

The Kenfrost Homes Cairns Dolphins are pleased to announce the signing of Amy Lewis to their 2022 NBL1 North team, joining Cayla George and Penina Davidson under Head Coach Myra Donkin.

The experienced WNBL guard joins the Dolphins after playing nine seasons in the league and suiting up for the Townsville Fire, Adelaide Lightning and SEQ Stars.

Originally from Hamilton, Lewis has also played in multiple state competitions; Queensland, Victoria and Adelaide, where she was named league MVP in 2014.

The 35-year-old is a graduate of NCAA Division I Troy University, making the all-conference First Team in her senior year and earning a WNBA trial with the Phoenix Mercury in 2008.

Lewis also boasts a Bronze Medal from the 2009 World University Games and joined the Australian Opals for their 2013 tour of China.

Most recently, she has played for the Brisbane Capitals and Ipswich Force where she was in the NBL1 North Top 10 for both scoring and assists last year. In 2021, she averaged 18.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.

Now a teacher at Cairns State High School, Lewis said she couldn’t wait to play for the Dolphins and reunite with so many people in her basketball circle.

“Signing with the Dolphins has been in the pipeline for a while now. My partner is from Cairns and so I have spent a lot of time here. Myra [Donkin] saw I was posting a lot of photos in Cairns and so she reached out about possibly playing for the Dolphins,” she explained.

“This was before the last NBL1 season, but I had already signed in Brisbane at that point. I told her I would love to have the same conversation next year, so this time around it was obviously an incredibly easy decision.

“It’s going to be a full circle experience for me – when I was with the Townsville Fire, I also played for the Ballarat Lady Miners in the winter, and one year I actually played alongside Cayla. It would’ve been one of her first gigs out of the AIS [Australian Institute of Sport] so it’s surreal to be back playing together in Cairns.

“I’m really liking the team so far – last season the Dolphins didn’t get the results, but I think they definitely got the experience and the development of some of the younger, talented girls.

“Adding Cayla and Nine [Davidson] to that will be a game changer and it’s all very exciting for Cairns Basketball and the season ahead.”
