Cairns Basketball Inc. are pleased to announce their first coaching appointment of 2021, with long-standing player Myra Donkin stepping off the court and onto the sidelines as Head Coach for the Kenfrost Homes Cairns Dolphins.
Donkin has been the face of the Dolphins program for almost a decade, suiting up for eight straight seasons and leading the team as starting point guard and captain.
The 36-year-old’s playing career has seen her compete in the WNBL, SEABL and QBL, boasting experience that will transition her seamlessly into the top position of player-coach for the inaugural NBL1 North season.
Donkin has coached multiple junior clubs and Cairns Representative Girls teams, and last year was an assistant coach for the Queensland North U18’s Boys team.
Donkin said she jumped at the opportunity to take the helm of the Dolphins and hopes to contribute to taking the team to new levels.
“I’m really honoured to be given this opportunity – I’ve been committed to the Dolphins for many years so it’s exciting to be part of the team in a different position and help shape something for the future.
“Kerry [Williams] was great for our group last season and I really want to build on what he has established, especially in terms of identifying and developing local talent.
“We have had so many talented juniors developed here and it’s important that the women’s basketball community of Cairns continues to grow and get stronger.”
Originally from WA, Donkin went to the States and captained Cincinnati State to the Elite 8 of the NJCAA tournament before playing for Elon University in North Carolina.
She returned home to play for the Perth Lynx in the WNBL, then suited up in the SEABL for two seasons with the Hobart Chargers.
Donkin moved to Cairns in 2011 to play for the Dolphins, all the while establishing a career in real estate and most recently joined The Industry Estate Agents in sales. She has two young daughters Brienne and Maliyah that both play on junior teams at Cairns Basketball.
