The Cairns Taipans are pleased to officially confirm they have signed NBL veteran Kyle Adnam, completing their 2024-25 roster. The popular point guard joins the Far North Queensland franchise for his sixth team in the league, and 12th professional season.
Adnam began his basketball journey with the Mt Evelyn Meteors, and later joined the Kilsyth Cobras. In the 2013 Victorian Youth Championship representing the Cobras, he averaged 17.7 points and 4.1 assists in his first season and was named league MVP. The Melbourne local finished with 39 points and 10 rebounds in the Grand Final to seal the Championship, gaining the attention of the Adelaide 36ers.
Adnam joined the South Australian side as a development player, before stints with the Wollongong Hawks and Melbourne United.
After completing four years as a DP, Adnam was elevated to Melbourne United’s roster in 2017; helping them to a 20-8 regular season record and winning the NBL Championship.
The 186cm guard signed with the Sydney Kings for the following season before returning to Melbourne in 2019 where he was able to find more consistent opportunities and averaged 9.1 points across the season with South East.
He was nominated as the Phoenix co-captain in 2020 and improved to 12 points and 3.9 assists, with several 20+ point games during a disrupted COVID season.
In 2023, Adnam surpassed 200 games in the NBL and took another step in his career, moving to Romania to compete for CSU Sibiu of the Liga Națională.
“With 200 plus games of NBL experience, he can provide so much to this group both on and off the court. He offers stability in our young back court and knowing that we can turn to him during testing times is a huge benefit to me as a coach,” explained Head Coach Adam Forde.
Returning to Australia earlier this year, Adnam signed as a Nominated Replacement Player with the Illawarra Hawks and appeared in three of their final seven games. The 30-year-old was a key figure and team leader during the Hawks’ remarkable run to the finals.
"Kyle’s experience in the NBL is a unique one that can provide some valuable lessons for our younger players. Kyle has practically played every role from development player to team captain, to most recently an injury replacement player,” said Coach Forde.
“Veteran leadership is more than just someone who has had an extensive playing career. True leadership must come from a selfless individual who can offer the group humble opinions that best serve the team first, setting aside his own individual ego. That takes a special individual, and I feel like we have found that with Kyle.”
