Championship-winner Alex Loughton will return to the Skytrans Cairns Marlins this year as an injury replacement for Stephen Weigh, who will miss the beginning of the QBL season.
Weigh has been diagnosed with a minor pre-stress fracture in his foot that requires a rest period of six weeks, to prevent any damage or long-term issues.
The 30-year old will still be engaged with the Marlins leading into the season, and Head Coach Jamie Pearlman assures that Loughton is a tried and tested short-term solution.
“While we’re obviously disappointed Stevie won’t be able to suit up straight away, we’re thrilled to have Alex Loughton back for the start of the season.
“He was a big part of our culture last year, and his experience has proven invaluable to our program,” said Pearlman.
Loughton recently finished a four-game contract with the Perth Redbacks in WA’s State Basketball League, where he played solid minutes and helped the team to a 4-0 start to their season.
“We kept an eye on his results in the SBL, and he put up good numbers over there. He shot the ball really well, and he’s in good touch,” said Pearlman.
“For our Taipans guys, it’s important to be playing at some level, for some length of time in the off-season so I’m certainly happy he’s joining us.
“It helps them stay sharp and makes the transition between off-season and NBL pre-season so much easier.”
The Skytrans Cairns Marlins season begins at Cairns Basketball on Friday 28 April.
