CQUniversity Cairns Taipans vice-captain and Rockhampton superstar Stephen Weigh will make his highly anticipated return to the QBL with the Skytrans Cairns Marlins this year.
The 30-year old forward joins the reigning QBL champions on the back of another impressive NBL campaign, where he helped lead the Taipans to the semi-finals with a Top Two finish.
Weigh was an integral part of the strongest bench squad in the League, where he averaged 5.3 points and 2.1 rebounds over 14 minutes of game time, shooting at 43.3 per cent from the field.
At the business end of the NBL season, he registered a new season-high record in points for three games in a row, including a 19-point haul at the Cairns Convention Centre in his best ever performance at home.
Marlins Head Coach Jamie Pearlman said Weigh’s signing was a priority for the QBL side, and crucial in their bid for a consecutive Championship.
“We are always looking at potential Taipans players that can come and fill roles that we might not be able to source with local players – more often than not, it’s in the big man department,” said Pearlman.
“Stevie had a knee operation last off-season, and he expressed to me that he felt like he was finding his form again midway through the NBL season. So, it just made sense for us to try and target him.
“His talent obviously speaks for itself, he’ll be fantastic for the culture and bring a level of experience and leadership that the other players will thrive on.”
“Weighzy” has played four QBL seasons throughout his career, suiting up for the Rockhampton Rockets in 2004, 2008, 2011 and 2013 – leading them to the National Championship in 2008 and QBL Championship in 2013.
The local Rocky legend joins the Marlins for his first NBL off-season campaign in four years, jumping at the opportunity to remain working closely with the Taipans.
“Professionally, it was a smart decision for myself and my body. It was imperative that I played back-to-back seasons to maintain my strength and fitness,” said Weigh.
“Personally, playing for the Marlins is the ideal situation. It means I can stay in Cairns and won’t have to commute during the off-season, and work hand-in-hand with our coaching staff.
“Having Jamie [Pearlman] at your disposal is a huge plus, and lays a good base for us to build on into the Taipans official pre-season.”
The final Skytrans Cairns Marlins squad will be selected after training tomorrow at Cairns Basketball.
