Season over for Taipan Williams

THE Taipans have moved quickly to reassure Kerry Williams he remains a big part of their future...

THE Taipans have moved quickly to reassure Kerry Williams he remains a big part of their future plans despite his season-ending knee injury.

Williams (pictured in Sunday’s game against Townsville) was ruled out of the upcoming NBL season yesterday after scans on his injured knee revealed he had torn his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments and will need reconstructive surgery.

While they will require another back-up point guard, searching for a new player was second priority yesterday to planning Williams’ treatment and rehabilitation.

As a local product and a player seen as a long-term Taipan, the club built much of their recruitment around Williams.

"To have him in the mix from an early planning point of view is something that’s not going to be able to be replaced overnight," general manager Mark Beecroft said.

"We think now about what to do."

Beecroft said the Taipans were under both the salary cap and points cap, enabling the club to find a replacement while Williams is out injured.

But coach Aaron Fearne said Williams remained in the club’s long-term plans.

"He’s going to have to have the surgery and do the rehab but he’ll bounce back and be ready for next year," Fearne said.

"He’s been a part of this thing for a long time and a big part of our culture and what we look for in a player.

"He’s a big part of our future."

Williams’ injury leaves the Taipans without a local product, although Fearne said another Cairns junior, Deba George, would come into consideration.

Williams suffered the injury during Sunday’s pre-season clash against Townsville, with George playing a leading hand after replacing his teammate in the match.

"Obviously we need to decide what we want to do in that back-up point guard position," Fearne said. "Deba put his hand up pretty high and hard (on Sunday) with his display.

"But we’ll do what we need to do to be a championship calibre team.(George) will definitely be in that (equation) for sure. We know what he’s capable of doing.

"He’s a great guy. But it’s going to be a tough and important decision because it’s an important position.

"Every guy that’s on that roster of 10 has to be capable of performing if things happen."

Williams’ injury continues a tough pre-season run for the Snakes, who were without four starters – Phill Jones, Arizona Reid, Alex Loughton and Ian Crosswhite – on Sunday due to a mix of injury and representative and personal commitments.

Crosswhite (quad strain) and Reid (hip flexor) are back training this week, while Loughton is due back today after heading to Perth on Friday for the early arrival of his son Liam.

Snakes ready to play ball

THE Taipans are champing at the bit to break the pre-season monotony with a practice match but will not be content to just run up and down the court.

The Snakes will hit the court in Sunday’s opening pre-season match against their great rivals Townsville gunning for a win.

While they will integrate several new players into the team for the first time, the Taipans will not be at full-strength, with Phill Jones (New Zealand) and Ian Crosswhite (quad injury) out of action.

And in a blow for fans, import forward Arizona Reid is also likely to be ruled out after picking up a hip flexor injury earlier this week.

But coach Aaron Fearne is not about to concede to his north Queensland rival.

‘‘You play to win,’’ Fearne said. ‘‘I don’t care if you’re playing under-12 or under-14 local competition or C grade men, you want to win.’’

But it will not be a case of victory at all costs.

"We want to develop a winning culture and we want to win,’’ he said.

‘‘But understanding that, we’ll play guys for different minutes and try different things. But we want to go and play hard and play to win and go out there and work on the things we’ve been talking about.’’

Fearne said Reid was only a ‘‘50-50’’ proposition.

‘‘And if it’s like that, it’s probably not going to happen,’’ he said.

‘‘He’s super eager to play, but it’s unlikely.’’

Crosswhite’s workload has increased this week after he was unable to do any legwork at all in the days after the quad strain but he too will miss the match.

‘‘He’ll be back in about a week. And Phill (Jones) is in Turkey (at the world championships) and playing very well,’’ Fearne said.

While some players are missing, fans will still get the opportunity to see new Taipans Ayinde Ubaka, Alex Loughton and Daniel Dillon in action.

Sunday’s match tips off at 4pm at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre.

NEW Taipan Ayinde Ubaka is on board.

If the Taipans "hate" Townsville, then point guard Ubaka – who plays his first game in Cairns colours against the Crocs tomorrow – is prepared to be the poster boy for the North’s rivalry.

"I know, Cairns hate Townsville, they told me," Ubaka said of possibly the fiercest rivalry in the NBL.

"So all right, I hate Townsville. I’m up for it. I’m on board here – if we hate Townsville, I’m with them."

Ubaka may have been in a joking mood at training yesterday but he’ll be all business tomorrow when an undermanned Taipans side faces the Crocs at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre.

Already without Phill Jones (representative commitments), Ian Crosswhite (quad) and Arizona Reid (hip flexor) for tomorrow’s clash, the Taipans were dealt another blow with Alex Loughton ruled out yesterday.

Loughton made a dash to Perth yesterday after his wife Michelle went into labour with their second child.

"Potentially there’s four starters not here, we’ve got to make up for the slack," Ubaka said.

Ubaka said the Taipans were waiting to be let loose in their first hitout after an intense pre-season campaign.

"We’ve done all these drills, we’re running hard, now it’s time to get out there and see what we’ve got this year," he said.

TAIPANS guard Kerry Williams will have MRI scans on his knee today after going down in agony in the second quarter of his side's 79-76 defeat to Townsville at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre yesterday.

View BOXSCORE

Play had to be halted while Williams was helped from the court and into the dressing room, with Taipans coach Aaron Fearne unsure of the severity of the injury after the match.

"They don’t think it is (serious) but until we hear from the MRIs we won’t
really know," he said.

Williams’s injury was the biggest headache for Fearne out of yesterday’s contest, which saw the Taipans recover from a 15-point deficit in the first quarter to nearly steal a win against their archrivals.

The Taipans’ offence misfired early, with the home team looking every bit like a combination having their first serious hit-out of the preseason.

Crocs big man Luke Schenscher was also proving a handful at the defensive end. The former NBA player commanded the paint throughout the match to finish with a game-high 23 points.

It looked like the Taipans were on their way to a heavy loss before the injection of Deba George sparked life into the home side.

Forced to play more minutes with Williams absent, George was outstanding in the third quarter and, along with Ayinde Ubaka – who was making his Taipans
debut – helped move his team within five points of the lead.

The Crocs pulled away late in the quarter but three-pointers to George, Ubaka and a score to veteran Aaron Grabau early in the final term drew the Taipans level.

When Ubaka drove hard to the basket and netted with two minutes left, the Taipans had the lead for the first time.

But a three-point bomb from Michael Cedar kept the Crocs in touch before the visitors edged away between timeouts in the final minute.

The Taipans had the chance to level the game with the final shot of the match but Grabau’s three-point attempt fell just
short.

Fearne said the Taipans’ poor start ultimately cost them the game.

"There were a bit of nerves early and that probably hurt us in the end because we had to work so hard to get out of the hole," he said.

"But we showed some really good toughness and some fight. We had free throws and open shots to win the game. You want to put yourself in a position to do that and we
did."

TOWNSVILLE CROCS 79 (Luke Schenscher 23, Brad Williams 17, Michael Cedar 15) d CAIRNS TAIPANS 76 (Dusty Rychart 17, Aaron Grabau 15, Deba George 14, Ayinde Ubaka 14).

THE Taipans have harnessed one of their biggest markets in a move that is working for the National Basketball League club and Cairns' restaurants.

Five restaurants have signed on as platinum partners with the club, each buying Taipans season-ticket packages of 10 platinum seats for their staff, clients or customers.

The seat pledges formed part of the Taipans’ membership drive earlier this year, an effort that was a key plank of their successful submission for re-entry to the NBL.

In return, the Taipans are encouraging members to support the restaurants on the first Tuesday of each month when mass visits have been arranged.

Each of the five participating restaurants will be visited twice over a 10-month period.

Three events have been held so far – at Villa Romana, Hog’s Breath Cafe and Fasta Pasta – with the Taipans group numbering more than 110 on each occasion.

“The restaurants on a game night had a benefit from people going in pre-game and post-game (for a meal),” Taipans general manager Mark Beecroft said.

“We worked with them to provide ticketing options for their clients, staff and customers.

“They get a benefit, as do we.”

Beecroft said the food industry had been difficult to market to in the past, with most businesses at their busiest on Taipans game nights.

“It’s been an avenue of the market we’ve not been able to harness in the past,” he said. “The restaurants have definitely benefited from our games over the past 11 seasons.

“One thing that’s pretty clear on game night is the restaurants are pretty filled with Taipans shirts.

“People do make a night of it and it’s just harnessing what’s happened for a long time in the city on a game night.

“This mechanism has definitely given us something we both needed.”

Feedback has been positive from both the businesses and fans.

Fasta Pasta Cairns owner Val La Vista said joining the partnership had been worthwhile. “It’s well worth it and great to see a lot of support for the local club,” Mr La Vista said.

“I ended up doing about 250 meals that night and I usually do about 120 (on a Tuesday).”

And he said there was plenty of return business from Snakes fans.

The next Taipans Tuesday will be at Cafe China on September 7, with the Taipans working with the business to position the date to tie in with the opening of new premises at the Reef Casino.

The Raw Prawn will host a Taipans Tuesday on October 5.

IT'S been a long journey for Dean Brebner to become a Taipan - metaphorically and literally...

IT'S been a long journey for Dean Brebner to become a Taipan - metaphorically and literally speaking.

The forward/centre, who last week sealed the final spot on the Taipans’ roster, moved to Cairns three years ago from Victoria to chase his NBL dream.

He was a development player for his first two seasons here, but his goal of becoming a full-time roster player seemed further away than ever last year when he failed to win a place in the Snakes’ line-up.

But after working on his fitness and game during the QBL season in which he captained the Marlins, Brebner was pitched into a battle with Simon Conn for the last place in the Taipans’ team.

"It’s very nerve racking, you’ve got to come in and give it all you’ve got for that one week," Brebner said of the head-to-head trial with Conn. "I definitely came in and did that and then waiting by the phone was very nerve-racking.

"I really didn’t know what to feel (when I found out), I was shaking and I was really excited.

"It’s always been a dream of mine to play NBL – I’d done that previously but as a development player.

"It had always been a dream to be in the actual team of an NBL team.

"To find out you’ve
actually achieved your goal, your dream – now I’m just ready to get in here, grab it with both hands and go for it."

Brebner paid tribute to his parents, who logged plenty of hours behind the wheel as they drove the youngster around country Victoria to train and play.

"Living in a small country town as a junior – I’m from Camperdown in Victoria – we had to practice in Warrnambool, 45 minutes away," he said. "It’s not that far but for my parents who were both working and owned a fish and chip shop, they’ve got a big part to play in my getting to here.

"Travelling to Melbourne, to Warrnambool, to Terang to play basketball, it’s definitely been a very long road."

After playing college ball in the US, Brebner returned to Australia and lined up for SEABL club Geelong, from where he was recruited by the Taipans.

"It’s been a long journey but it’s been worth it to hear those words that you’ve made it," he said.

"It’s definitely good."

There were times it seemed like 26-year-old Brebner’s dream could be out of reach, especially when he missed the Taipans’ squad last year.

"I was definitely disappointed I didn’t make it – not in the organisation, just in myself," he said.

"I really wanted to be a part of the team but they went in a different direction. That was fine."

But after a talk with Taipans coach Aaron Fearne earlier this year, Brebner had a clear idea of what he had to do.

"He had a talk to me and just said I had to get back in shape, drop my weight and work on a few things in my game," Brebner said.

"I tried to do that in the context of the game, not really think about the Taipans as much when I was playing with the Marlins. This year just to be back and around it all (is great). You’ve got to chase your dream. I’m here now, so it’s definitely worth moving away."

Brebner regains Taipans spot

FORMER Snake Dean Brebner has won the Taipans' final roster spot for the NBL season.

Brebner and Sandringham centre Simon Conn were locked in a battle for the final roster spot, with Brebner
getting the nod in a tight decision.

The Cairns Marlins captain was a Taipans development player for two seasons and promoted to the main squad in late 2008 after imports Dave Thomas and Larry Abney were sacked by administrators when the club was placed in administration.

Brebner, a 200cm forward who can play at power forward or centre, was not picked up by the Taipans last year but regained his spot for the 2010-11 season after plenty of work on his fitness and game.

"It was a bit unfortunate for Simon (Conn) because he was injured and probably couldn’t show his best stuff," coach Aaron Fearne said of the battle for the last spot.

"There wasn’t anything glaring that showed that either stood out above the other."

But Brebner’s work ethic, dedication and knowledge of the Taipans’ system helped him over the line.

"He’s definitely a well-liked guy and a very hard worker and very passionate about the team and he’ll go out there and give it everything he’s got," Fearne said of Brebner.

"He knows the system and plays within the system. That’s what it came down to."

While Conn is slightly bigger than Brebner, the Taipans’ depth in the front court and ability of those players to be what Fearne called "multi-positional", meant height was not a major criterion.

Fearne said Brebner had worked hard to earn a chance at selection.

"He came into the Marlins season not in great shape," Fearne said.

"I told him if he wanted me to even consider him, he needed to get in great shape.

"He’s done that and he’s been very solid for the Marlins doing all the grunt work and played out of position.

"He’ll need to continue to do that and continue to improve his game to be a contributor at our level."

Brebner’s signing finalises the Taipans’ main group, although the club is still trialing a development player to join Gareth Dawson.

"I guess you complete your roster when you complete your roster," Fearne said.

"I said all along I was in no rush to get it done."

The Taipans’ pre-season program tips off on September 5 with a game against Townsville at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre.

THEY are the Taipans' own ''A-Team'' - the group of new recruits set to inject offensive punch and defensive mettle to the Snakes as they bid to win their first NBL championship.

Alex Loughton, Ayinde Ubaka and Arizona Reid have hit the court with the Snakes as they continue pre-season training.

They’re not on the run for a crime they didn’t commit but the Taipans will be happy if the trio act as ruthless soldiers of fortune for the club in their debut season.

While Reid and Ubaka have settled into life in the Far North after starting official pre-season training last week, Loughton met most of his teammates for the first time yesterday after arriving in Cairns at the weekend.

The 27-year-old arrived in town sooner than he would have liked after being among the last players cut from the Boomers squad ahead of the world championships.

While disappointed, he is keen to channel that emotion into performing for his new club.

"There’s always a positive that can come out of it – I learnt a lot and I thought I improved during this off-season," said Loughton, who is heading back into the NBL after a season in Spain.

"In preparation for this year it helps to be a part of the Boomers squad. It was cut short prematurely, so I’ve just got to accept it and move on, wish them the best and move on.

"You just do the best you can with your local club.

"It’s a different role when you come back to your team, it’s a higher responsibility to contribute.

"That will build up the confidence, hopefully, come off a good year and put in a strong performance for the (next Boomers)
try-outs."

Loughton was the first big signing announced by the Taipans for season 2010-11 and he sees plenty of "upside" in the team assembled, including his A-Team mates.

"There’s a lot of different things we can go to," he said of the Taipans’ group.

"It looks like a smaller team at this stage without (the injured Ian) Crosswhite, we’ve got pretty quick but pretty tall guys in the guard position.

"Ayinde being (191cm) and pretty strong, we should be a fairly aggressive team and fast.

"Maybe the whole league’s moving that way, I’m not sure but that’s what we’ve got and that’s what we’re bringing to the table."

Taipans coach Aaron Fearne – who insists his recruitment drive was not motivated by available players’ first initial – is pleased with the group assembled but aware of the work still ahead.

"Ayinde proved what he can do last year. He’s definitely very excited and motivated to come back and prove he’s going to be very difficult to defend," Fearne said.

"Alex has that toughness, smarts and maturity. He’s performed very well in this league.

"And Arizona can just score and find different ways to score. He’s obviously a very good athlete.

"But it’s the task of getting them to play together, getting them to defend together, getting them to work hard together – that comes next."

THE Taipans may head into their first pre-season game without Ian Crosswhite, with the starting centre battling a quadriceps strain.

Crosswhite sat out the opening week of pre-season training last week and is likely to be sidelined for another week or two before joining the Taipans on court.

The injury blow is frustrating for the big man, who is eager to get back on court after successful surgery on his left wrist over the off-season.

"I came back a little too hard and I’ve partially torn my quad," Crosswhite said.

"I’ve got another couple of weeks on the sideline.

"It’s pretty frustrating too because I really wanted to do well this season.

"I’m up for a new contract at the end of the year, so I obviously wanted to have the best year possible and the best
preparation."

The Taipans started on-court work last week with imports Ayinde Ubaka and Arizona Reid joining the mix.

Crosswhite wants to be part of that mix and while frustrated at not being able to be on the floor, is excited at what the new season will bring.

"I want to be out there and be involved in what everyone’s doing," said Crosswhite, who missed much of the end of last season with the wrist injury.

"I miss just playing, I haven’t played in so long, it feels like.

"Everyone’s having such a good time out there and I think we have so much more talent than what we had last year, it will make it more enjoyable."

He said the Taipans’ off-season recruiting drive had been "great".

"Now it’s just getting us all to come together and see who’s going to sacrifice what, who’s going to do what it takes to win," he said.

"We don’t know where that’s going to go yet but everyone’s really positive, we think it’s going to be a really good year."

While he has to overcome the quad strain, Crosswhite is upbeat about the touch he has regained since having complicated surgery on his wrist.

"It’s getting stronger all the time and I’m really happy with how that went and the surgeon did a great job," he said of the reconstruction following major ligament damage to his left wrist.

"Because it was my left hand and I’m left handed, it was a pretty big thing for me that it was right.

"But I’m more than pleased with how it’s come back.

"I thought it would take a lot longer to get my shot back and get my touch back but that’s come back quite naturally."

The Snakes will not be left without a front court presence in the pre-season though, with forward Alex Loughton joining the group today fresh from his stint with the
Boomers.

The Taipans start their pre-season campaign with a match against Townsville on September 5, ahead of away games against the Crocs and Gold Coast and then NBL grand finalists Wollongong and the Gold Coast again at the pre-season Top End Challenge in Darwin next month.
