In January 2009, a group of dedicated Cairns people embarked on something special ... 'saving the Taipans'. The rest of the Cairns and surrounding communites embraced the cause with a passion, and 5 months later in June the Taipans were saved. Support came from all corners including current NBA players Nathan Jawai and Andrew Bogut, most importantly it came from the community of Cairns.

It wasn't just the community of Cairns that noticed, the whole of Basketball in Australia did too. It's fair to say that the Taipans method also influenced other basketball communities like Woolongong, who adopted a similiar approach to saving the Hawks.
In total $755, 400 was pledged by business's and individuals, comprising of 152 Foundation memberships of $5,000 including 17 syndicates of various amounts. The rest as they say is history.
