This program is specifically designed to have high-profile coaches and players instructing the correct fundamental techniques required to play basketball.  It is a goal of Skytrans Cairns Taipans club to be in touch with basketball participation at the grass-roots level, by providing a strong foundation of skill development to kids as the progress through the sports development pathway.

The Skytrans Cairns Taipans launched their new ‘Tiny Taipans’ program on Saturday morning August 15, at the Bendigo Bank Basketball Centre. The program which will be conducted in partnership with Cairns Basketball is based on Basketball  Aussie Hoops initiative.

Young kids aged 5 years old to 9 years old will learn the fundamental skills of Basketball in weekly, 60-minute sessions over the next 14-weeks. Sessions are held at the Fish Tank on Saturday mornings from 8am – 9am. Skytrans Cairns Taipans Head Coach Aaron Fearne and Assistant Coach Mick Downer will co-facilitate the Tiny Taipans sessions.

A number of the Skytrans Cairns Taipans players will also be present to help teach the game to youngsters throughout the duration of the program.

Skytrans Cairns Taipans Community & Operations Manger Joel Khalu said the program was a great way for new players to learn the skills from experienced high-level players & coaches. “I don’t think there would be too many situations around the country where a NBL Head Coach & Assistant Coach are teaching the game to kids aged 5-9,” Khalu said.

“It reflects the clubs commitment to development at the grassroots level and we are proud to work in partnership with Cairns Basketball on this fantastic new program.” “It’s our hope that by teaching kids the correct fundamentals early on, it may help create a few future Taipans players down the track.” “We want Cairns kids playing for the Skytrans Cairns Taipans and local star Kerry Williams is a great example how this can happen,” Khalu added.
