CQUniversity Cairns Taipans point guard Jarrad Weeks will be joining the Skytrans Cairns Marlins this season, in his first QBL campaign.
The 27-year old had informal discussions with Cairns Basketball throughout his first season with the Taipans, and the Marlins have now formalised his involvement.
Weeks began his career as a development player with the Sydney Kings before he joined the Illawarra Hawks, initially as an injury replacement.
In his first NBL season, Weeksy earned the popular “Agent 97” nickname thanks to the blood singlet he was allocated and his regular appearances in highlight reels.
The moniker (and unique playing number) followed him to Cairns last season, and will continue in his QBL debut.
Cairns Marlins Head Coach Jamie Pearlman said that Weeks is another example of how the competition is stepping up.
“There are a lot of NBL players joining the QBL this year, so we’re expecting it to be really tough, and we know that Weeksy will be a defining factor for us,” said Pearlman.
“He’s a pure point guard, with a high basketball IQ. He’s obviously very exciting with his athleticism and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do in this League.”
Pearlman and the Marlins will be looking to back up their 2016 Championship this year, but will have a new-look roster, and as a result will be adjusting their style of play.
“We’re looking to play that up-tempo style, which is different from what we did last season. Weeksy will be quick up and down the floor for us, and we will be looking to push the tempo, and push the ball harder up the court.”
The Skytrans Cairns Marlins begin their season against Townsville on Friday 28 April.
