Taipans Indigenous Programme

As a community-owned club, the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans seek to service the communities which support it by encouraging healthy and active lifestyles under a range of programmes throughout the year.

In 2013, the club launched an ambitious plan to build on its 800-hour annual commitment to the community with its new Sea Swift Indigenous Development Programme.

Thanks to the generous support of naming rights sponsor, Sea Swift, and Platinum Partner, Skytrans, the programme serves to expand the club’s renowned community engagement programme into Cape York and beyond.

Led by former Cairns Taipan, Kerry Williams, the Taipans Sea Swift Indigenous Development Programme aims to spread healthy living messages and increase participation levels throughout the Cairns and Cape York region.

Williams’ journey from local club ranks into junior representative basketball and the top level in Australia is a story which makes him an inspirational role model to Indigenous youth throughout the region.

Already Williams has logged a series of visits to Horn Island and Thursday Island to deliver coaching courses and development clinics around NAIDOC Week celebrations. In August 2014 he was invited to speak at the inaugural National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation Ochre Day in Canberra, a forum designed to engage Indigenous role models to shed light on Indigenous men’s health issues.
